Exciting things at Cadillac: Coupe, XTS, ATS

With Summer coming on it is good to keep up with where we are in terms of upcoming Cadillacs.

Cadillac CTS Coupe, CTS-V Coupe:

Production should start in June 2010 for the Coupe, and at the same time for the CTS-V Coupe.  These have been very well received at the Auto  Shows, and there is a great deal of excitement about them.  The Coupe is a 2-door Cadillac, which touches a special place with Personal Luxury Buyers.   The Cadillac CTS Coupe could be considered a modern, high tech, high performance, high luxury variant of the classic Eldorado, or Coupe DeVille.

Cadillac XTS:

Developed on the Epsilon II platform, this will be a FWD or AWD luxury sedan.  The Cadillac XTS is similar to the successful Buick Lacrosse with an even higher standard of luxury appointments and styling.  This promises to be an excellent Cadillac.  Think maximum luxury, excellent efficiency, a smart choice for smart Buyers.

Cadillac ATS:

The BMW 3-Series Killer.  This is a smaller-than-a-CTS based on the new Alpha chassis/platform.  The Alpha is being developed from the Kappa ( as used under the Pontiac Solstice/Opel GT/Saturn Sky) and looks to be a very flexible, very capable, very light RWD platform.  Take Cadillac power trains and luxury items, put them on a small, light, efficient package, and you have a recipe for a wonderful Cadillac.  Not every Cadillac is for every buyer, nor should they be.  But for those of us who lean to more sport and less rear seat leg room, the ATS could be the perfect choice.

Summary

Cadillac has more refreshes and updates on the way.   For example the long wheel base version of the Alpha is the likely choice for the next generation of CTS.  This is a very good time to get to know your local Cadillac Dealer, and to stay tuned here to CaddyInfo.

Cadillac CTS Coupe, then XTS, then ATS?

No Cadillac ATS at the NY Auto Show.   The CTS-V Sport Wagon was there instead.

The CTS Coupe and CTS-V Coupe will be in showrooms this summer.  Lots of excitement about these two, and hopefully “a rising tide lifts all boats” and increased showroom traffic will result in more CTS Sedan sales as well.

Next model year, in 2011, we are likely to see the new Cadillac XTS sedan rolling down the line at Lansing Grand River as a 2012 model.  At that point we will have the CTS Family in Sedan, Coupe, or Sport Wagon, including CTS-V Sedan, Coupe or Sport Wagon.  Escalade Family in regular, extended, or pickup bed, and SRX.  The STS will bow out after the 2011 model probably.  Cadillac said that the DTS will continue in 2011, but it does not appear in the order book, so that seems limiting.

The ATS will likely arrive in 2012 as a 2013 model; the rumors still don’t correlate.  I expect we will see a concept soon, and then it will arrive in 2012 as a 2013 model.  The XTS arriving in 2011 as a 2012 model suggests that the ATS won’t arrive in 2011.

The ATS will take over from the CTS as the sedan sales leader for Cadillac.  This is a crucial launch for Cadillac, as the ATS will largely become the new Cadillac, and everything depends on how good this new model is. The CTS refresh will make it a bit larger and a bit more upmarket.  The ATS and the refreshed CTS will both be on the Alpha platform.

Re: Next-Gen CTS to Join #Cadillac ATS on Alpha RWD platform – @motor_trend

Motor Trend has an interesting Cadillac ATS article up: Next-Gen Camaro, CTS to Join Small Cadillac ATS on New Rear-Drive Platform – Wide Open Throttle – Motor Trend Magazine

Fun Cadillac ATS Details from the article:

  1. ATS is in fact on a new RWD Alpha platform
  2. ATS is due in calendar year 2014 (as a 2015 model?)
  3. Next Generation CTS will also move to the Alpha platform and grow 6 inches in 2013 as a 2014 model
  4. CTS Coupe and CTS Wagon will be discontinued in favor of ATS Coupe and ATS Wagon
  5. Platform will be lighter than the current Cadillac CTS Sigma platform
  6. Next generation Chevrolet Camaro will share the same Alpha platform
  7. Supercharged or turbocharged version of the gas direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6 should be available (!)
  8. Cars will be more fuel efficient than the current models

All good news except for the 2014 arrival date; I was hoping for 2012 as a 2013 model.  Love that Cadillac recognizes they need to get some weight out, and bring a bit more power to the sport sedan mix.  Putting the CTS on Alpha makes a lot of sense if it is flexible enough to support the range of wheelbases needed.
