Make my Cadillac XTS AWD

One of the available features of the new Cadillac XTS, arriving in showrooms this summer, is the Haldex All-wheel drive system with electronically controlled limited slip differential.

The advantage of this system:

  • All-wheel drive traction for improved control & safety in rain or snow

while the disadvantages:

  • slightly more weight
  • 1 mpg less highway fuel economy

Traditionally the disadvantages to an AWD system have been more severe.  The new system is lighter and more capable which act to mitigate the disadvantages and improve the advantages.

Cadillac notes:

A smart Haldex all-wheel-drive system – with an electronic limited-slip differential that splits torque between the rear wheels – complements an advanced HiPer Strut front suspension and standard Magnetic Ride Control real-time damping to give the XTS sure-footed, confident and comfortable ride and handling traits. A linked H-arm design with “air springs” comprises the rear suspension.

One of the features previously discussed for the XTS AWD (see discussion here) was the ability to ‘tune’ the powertrain to have the same characteristics as a rear-wheel drive vehicle.

Another feature I would like to see is a full performance version of the AWD hardware — say on a future CTS-V — with the advantage of full hp launches with AWD traction.  I am hopeful that as Cadillac continues to develop these systems along with Haldex that we will see a high-performance version some day.

2013 Cadillac XTS — the world at your fingertips

Cadillac has more details available for the Cadillac XTS.   It is arriving with every gadget possible, and some new ones.  The basic car appears to be a larger , all-wheel drive model with the LFX 3.6L V6 for 300 hp.  The show car was a hybrid, so hopefully we’ll see that to follow.  Releases posted here and here.

A key feature will be a 12.3″ reconfigurable cluster — the part where the gauges are is all an electronic screen.  Cadillac CUE is the highly customizable user interface that exemplifies XTS’ blend of advanced technology and artistic design. The heart of CUE, which stands for Cadillac User Experience, is the standard eight-inch (203 mm) screen in the “center stack,” the faceplate below the screen and the steering wheel controls. CUE features several industry firsts, including capacitive-touch control with proximity sensing, gesture recognition and natural voice recognition.

Two levels of control-and-alert protection are offered in the XTS’ Enhanced Safety Strategy (ESS) packages.

ESS I includes:

  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Safety Alert Seat
  • Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Reflected LED display.

ESS II includes all ESS I content plus:

  • Head-up display (in color)
  • Front and Rear Automatic Brake
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Automatic Collision Preparation

The  Cadillac XTS will be priced above the CTS.  Initial pricing has not been announced but it will perhaps start at $44K.

SRX leads Cadillac Oct 11 Sales

Overall Cadillac sales were down 12% in Oct 2011 as compared to Oct 2010.  The disappearance of the Cadillac DTS from the showroom made the primary difference in sales from last year; add in those 1.3K sales and this year would be flat to last year.  To keep some perspective, Oct 2010 was a strong month, up 15% from 2009.

The Cadillac SRX sales were the highlight, at 4.9K units for the month, up 12.7% overall or 17% per sales day.  CTS sales were strong although down somewhat from 2010 at 3.9K units for the month vs 4.2K last year.
