Large Cadillacs Continue to Lead Sales Gains in July

2016 Cadillac CT6

Cadillac had continued good news from large car sales in July, (after being up 48% in June):

  • Crossovers:  SRX+XT5 total 6,258 vs 6,753 last year or down 7%
  • Large Cars: XTS+CT6: total 1,753 vs 1,302 or up 35%
  • ATS: up 33% (Nice!).  I’d still like to see US ATS sales up closer to 5K/mo.
  • Looks like Cadillac is finally running out of ELRs.

Cadillac sales were up in June 2016 by 5.5% versus June 2015 on strong Crossover and SUV sales.

  • ATS sales were down 15% as sales continue to struggle, although the month raised the average for the year
  • CT6 showed a good early month for a $50K+ luxury vehicle at 962 – see more under XTS
  • CTS sales held steady.at 1,516, a quite good result
  • ELR has been cancelled for 2017 but moved 94 more, about average for 2016
  • Escalade was up nicely at 2,960 total
  • SRX+XT5 sales were at 5,667 so about even with SRX sales in 2016; a very strong showing for Crossovers
  • XTS sales continued at 1,184, or down 18%, although XTS + CT6 sales together were up nicely 2,146 vs 1,447 last year or 48%.  Although quite different cars, the XTS and CT6 in some ways fit the same part of the market — larger luxury.

Cadillac sales are down for the year to date, but June was a promising inflection.

The good news was although Cadillac sales were overall down in the US and other markets, they were up 30% in China.  China continues as the 2nd largest market in the world for Cadillac.

Cadillac sold 22,239 new vehicles globally in May, a decrease of 3.8 percent, as deliveries of the brand’s two all-new products, the CT6 prestige sedan and XT5 luxury crossover, commenced with customers.

Cadillac sales in China rose 30 percent in May. China is the world’s largest market, and Cadillac’s growth there continues to accelerate. So far this year, Cadillac has grown more than 12 percent in China.

Globally, more than 4,000 units of the 2017 XT5 were sold in its first full month of sales, despite low initial inventories and a gradual production ramp-up. For the second consecutive month, deliveries of the outgoing SRX fell sharply as inventories of the prior model continued to sell out and initial shipments of its successor, the XT5, started to build in May.

In the U.S. market, Cadillac average transaction prices were $54,131 (according to J.D. Power Information Network, May 16), the highest among full-line luxury brands.

“Leading in transaction prices indicates the rising stature of Cadillac in consumers’ minds, and represents the manifestation of our continued strategy to prioritize the elevated position of the brand over volume,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “Reinforcing the aspirational stature of our brand is a key ingredient as we pursue expansion of our global footprint.”

I am not sure what the footnote on China 2016 sales refers to — unless there are also additional non-retail sales not included.
