CADILLAC BREAKS THROUGH THE LUXURY MARKET WITH FIVE PRODUCT LAUNCHES IN 18 MONTHS

For a century, Cadillac has been known for breakthroughs such as the self-starter, the first mass-produced V8 engine, the first high-volume car to be designed by a stylist and the first mass-produced vehicle stability system. Cadillac’s tradition of pioneering technical advancements with real customer benefits continues, with technology such as Night Vision, OnStar, XM Satellite Radio and Magnetic Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension.

Today, Cadillac is in the midst of a product renaissance – debuting five all-new vehicles in 18 months. For the 2003 model year, Cadillac launches the entry-luxury CTS sedan, an enhanced Escalade and Escalade EXT, and the new Escalade ESV full-size SUV. These four models join the existing Seville and DeVille lineup. In mid-2003, the luxury utility SRX and XLR luxury roadster will enter the mix – both as ’04 model-year vehicles. The SRX will combine performance with functionality and feature Cadillac’s signature bold styling. The XLR debuted to media at the 2002 North American International Auto Show to rave reviews, as did the Cien concept car – a premium V12-powered, mid-engine, two-seat supercar. In addition, Cadillac will debut a CTS performance edition, yet-to-be-named, during the 2004 calendar year.

Here’s a snapshot of the 2003 Cadillac lineup.

CTS: The CTS is fashioned from Cadillac’s edgy, tailored new design vocabulary. It is built on an all-new rear-wheel-drive architecture, features a 220-hp 3.2L V6 with a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. It was the first North American vehicle to be tested at the famed Nürburgring track in Germany.

Escalade: The Escalade, which debuted as a 2002 model, already features significant enhancements for 2003, including the passenger-sensing system, HID headlamps and new options such as XM Satellite Radio and a Panasonic DVD Passenger Entertainment System.

Escalade EXT: The EXT sport utility truck features many of the same improvements as the Escalade, including those mentioned above.

Escalade ESV: The 2003 Cadillac Escalade ESV is the largest full-size luxury SUV available – and the largest Cadillac ever produced. Some 22 inches longer than Escalade, with more than 20 extra inches of interior length, it provides customers with additional premium seating and segment-leading cargo-carrying capability. Cadillac’s exclusive 345-hp 6.0L V8 engine also makes Escalade, Escalade EXT and Escalade ESV the most powerful full-size SUVs in the world. This high-output powertrain cranks out 380 ft-lb of torque at 4000 rpm – or more than enough power to handle steep grades or a heavily weighted two-horse trailer. And GM’s full-time all-wheel-drive and StabiliTrak systems give owners extra confidence regardless of weather and road conditions.

What’s more, the Escalade ESV shares the same bold exterior design and commanding road presence as Escalade and Escalade EXT, with new-for-2003 luxury enhancements and all of the advanced-technology premium features that have made Escalade the leader – and an icon – in the full-size luxury utility segment.

In addition to the confidence underfoot afforded from AWD and StabiliTrak with Road Sensing Suspension (RSS), the Escalade ESV offers such technological advancements as Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist, OnStar and XM Satellite Radio service. Plus, it offers a rear-seat entertainment system with a Panasonic DVD player, a new Bulgari-designed analog clock, as well as a host of other luxury amenities. The addition of the Escalade ESV to Cadillac’s Escalade lineup will help GM continue to build momentum in the luxury utility market.

“The Escalade ESV is a great addition to Cadillac’s family of luxury utilities,” said Cadillac general manager Mark LaNeve. “Customer feedback tells us there is market potential for a full-size luxury SUV that provides additional seating and cargo space. Combined with the Escalade and the Escalade EXT, the Escalade ESV will help Cadillac lead this segment of the luxury utility market.”

Seville: Seville debuts next-generation Magnetic Ride Control technology, a ride control system that improves vehicle stability, directional steering responses, ride comfort and body-motion control.

DeVille: DeVille makes a few changes for 2003, including new Michelin tires for better ride and handling.

Cadillac also debuted a unique, compelling advertising campaign to support its new lineup. The “Break Through” campaign reflects Cadillac’s return to its heritage of producing vehicles known for head-turning design and innovative technology. The first spot broke during the 2002 Super Bowl broadcast, and Cadillac followed it up with spots during additional high-profile events such as the Winter Olympics, Academy Awards, Wimbledon tennis and various prime-time programming.

Throughout, the integrated campaign builds divisional identity, while highlighting the breadth of the portfolio. Television spots feature the song “Rock and Roll” by the rock group Led Zeppelin.

As Cadillac realigns its product portfolio, many Cadillac dealerships are undergoing a metamorphosis with all-new dealer showrooms. Developed in 2000, the new retail design concept expresses the heart and soul of Cadillac with high-quality materials and lighting to create an open, modern space.

The architecture and interior design align showrooms with the look of Cadillac’s product direction. The showrooms feature two exclusive materials – oversized ceramic black porcelain tile flooring and patterned wool carpet. Black leather furniture features wood and metal accents, and fabrics mix black, white and platinum. The interior pays especially close attention to detail in the sales and service areas, to help elevate the car-buying experience.

Williamson Cadillac in Miami was the first to adapt the new concept, and Cadillac projects up to 20 percent of its dealers will resdesign their showrooms by the end of 2003.

2002 CADILLAC ELDORADO ADDS REFINEMENTS FOR NEW MODEL YEAR

For nearly 50 years, the Eldorado has helped distinguish Cadillac from the competition. Long considered the ultimate in prestige, Eldorado has also been a technological showcase, consistently debuting new, groundbreaking innovations.

“Features such as StabiliTrak, Magnasteer and continuously variable road-sensing suspension set Eldorado apart from other luxury offerings,” said Steve Rosenblum, Eldorado brand manager. “In terms of design, its sharp, razor edges and angular body give it a distinctive appearance on the road.”

The 2001 model was built to be the most advanced and responsive Eldorado ever, and continues to be the best-selling prestige luxury coupe in the United States. Production was shifted from the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Center in Detroit to the Lansing Craft Centre in Lansing, Michigan, creating manufacturing efficiencies, achieving a better balance between available facilities and market demand and improving overall quality.

For 2002, Cadillac has added a few additional refinements to the Eldorado. Routine maintenance becomes less time consuming, with oil and filter change intervals increased from every 10,000 miles to 12,500 miles.

The Eldorado also has new factory fill engine oil that meets the industry’s upgraded GF3 oil specifications. The specification calls for a .5 to 1 percent increase in fuel economy and a 40 percent reduction in oil consumption. The new oil is more highly refined and contains more detergent inhibitor.

Offering both 275- and 300-horsepower variants, the 4.6-liter aluminum 32-valve Northstar V8 remains the heart of the Eldorado. The engine was redesigned in 2000, resulting in significantly lower emissions, quieter operation, and better fuel economy running on regular unleaded fuel. All without losing the performance that has long been Northstar’s signature. The 2000 engine featured an all-new head design, new intake manifolds, coil-on-plug ignition and rolling cam runners to reduce friction.

Other features that distinguish the Eldorado include new OnStar services – Personal Calling capability and OnStar Virtual Advisor. Added in the 2001 model year, Personal Calling allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated personal calls from their vehicles without an additional cellular contract. Virtual Advisor delivers personalized Internet-based information such as e-mail, news headlines, sports scores, stock quotes and weather conditions to the vehicle. 2002 CADILLAC DEVILLE OFFERS NEW DVD-BASED NAVIGATION SYSTEM, OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

The DeVille nameplate, steeped in more than half a century of automotive history, symbolizes Cadillac’s proud heritage while serving as a harbinger of the division’s future. Bold, groundbreaking technologies such as Night Vision, the acclaimed Northstar engine and StabiliTrak have shaped the DeVille’s character, and help distinguish the marque from other full-size luxury automakers.

Completely redesigned in 2000, the DeVille’s clean, flowing exterior strikes the perfect balance between formal and sporty. Its chiseled, shear lines are distinctly Cadillac, as are cues such as its shield-shaped grille and strong side spline.

“The DeVille has been the best-selling luxury car in America for 16 years, and the latest generation continues to drive the average age of Cadillac customers down,” said Pat Kemp, DeVille brand manager. “Traditionally, pre-boomers have represented DeVille’s primary customer base, and by 2005, we expect nearly 40 percent of buyers in this segment will be boomers.”

Advanced Vehicle Navigation

One significant change is a new DVD-based Advanced Vehicle Navigation system. The system incorporates voice recognition, complementing the DeVille’s “eyes on the road, hands on the wheel” philosophy, and enables drivers to view detailed maps on a 6.5-inch diagonal touch-screen. The screen tilts down to allow for the loading of the map data DVD, an entertainment DVD or an audio CD while the vehicle is in Park. One DVD covers the continental United States and Canada. Drivers can still play music CDs while using the DVD system by using a six-disc CD changer in the glove box. In addition, passengers can watch DVD movies with superior sound from the Bose sound system when the vehicle is in Park.

The GPS-based system has five languages and voice prompts that recognize two drivers. The system remembers 60 preprogrammed locations per driver.

Maintenance

Routine maintenance becomes less time-consuming in 2002, with maximum oil and oil filter change intervals increased from 10,000 to 12,500 miles. All DeVilles have an oil life monitor that tells drivers when they need oil changes based on their environment and type of driving.

The DeVille also has new factory fill engine oil that meets the industry’s upgraded GF3 specifications. The specification results in a .5 to 1- percent increase in fuel economy and a 40 percent reduction in oil consumption. The new oil is more highly refined and contains more detergent inhibitor.

A new color joins the DeVille’s exterior palette–Blue Onyx, and Cadillac’s new wreath and crest emblem will grace the decklid, grille emblem, hood ornament, keys, steering wheel, wheel caps, and engine top cover.

In addition, new rear shocks and front struts with four-stage valving improve the ride on the DeVille and DHS models.

Safety and convenience

Always a safety leader, DeVille offers a new feature in 2002: dual-stage air bag inflaters. New dual-stage inflators offer maximum protection in high-speed crashes while minimizing injury risk to smaller stature occupants. The system detects vehicle acceleration, and provides the appropriate level of air bag inflation.

For added convenience, an additional power outlet in the front passenger seat tray offers another place to plug in devices needing power. And, a new express-up feature powers the front windows up with a quick touch of the button.

XM Satellite Radio

In 2002, the DeVille will have XM Radio, a new band of satellite radio with up to 100 individual channels of digital-quality programming. It will offer an array of innovative formats unavailable in many markets today, including music, news, sports, talk and children’s radio. XM combines commercial-free, limited advertiser-supported and brand-name channels with continuous, uninterrupted service anywhere in the continental United States for a $9.99 monthly subscription fee.

The stereo system has been updated with new, simplified Radio Data System (RDS) functions. If a station subscribes to RDS, which allows the radio to receive digital data transmitted along with the standard radio signal, drivers can view song names and artists, as well as the type of radio station. The system is now easier to use and more intuitive.

Also new is a phone integration kit that accommodates a tri-band phone, enabling drivers to access digital, analog or PCS service.
