Gen1 CTS-V: Supercharger?

In my previous article about performance mods for Cadillacs I mentioned the great gains possible in the LS2 with a Cam/head package, and I argued that if you intended to add a Supercharger you might do that up front instead of doing a cam/head modification.  One advantage of a supercharger add is that it leaves no question as to the drive-ability of the car, and maintains a smooth idle.

Let’s look at the current situation for supercharger modification options.  The Cadillac solution of course, as used on the 2009+ CTS-V with LSA supercharged V8 is a TVS1900 supercharger.

The Corvette LS9 engine uses the larger 6th generation TVS2300 supercharger, and some CTS-V owners have found that if they upgrade from the TVS1900 to the TVS2300 they gain significant horsepower.  Based on my reading, it appears that the TVS1900 is good on a 6.2L engine up to around 800 crank horsepower; you would want the TVS2300 if you are targeting above this number.

For the 6L LS2 engine in the 2006/2007 for most applications the TVS 1900 Seems a better fit than the TVS 2300.

The previous Magnuson supercharger kit for the 2004-2007 CTS-V used the 5th generation MP112 1.84L unit.  That setup for LS6 engines made 6 psi of boost, and added on average 130 whp according to Magnuson.

Interestingly, the STS-V and XLR-V 4.4L engines used a modified version of the MP122 unit.  It adds 10 cubic inches to the M112, so rounds up to a full 2L of displaced air.

The size indicates the amount of air displaced with each revolution of the blower.  So at the same RPM and gearing the MP112 will pump 1.84L of air, the TVS 1900 will pump 1.9L of air, and the TVS 2300 will pump 2.3L of air.  The new TVS units are also more efficient, will make more power at the same boost due to lower heat added to the air charge, and are quieter.  The simple amount of air pumped per revolution does not tell the whole story.

TVS means Twin Vortices Series.  The new TVS series superchargers are 4-lobe Eaton units with 160 degrees of twist along the rotor.  This simulates twin vortices of air rushing into the intake system.  The 5th generation units like the M112 or M122 used 3 lobes with 60 degrees of twist along each rotor.  All TVS superchargers have a 2.4 pressure ratio capability and a thermal efficiency that exceeds 70 percent, which enables more compact packaging and greater output.  The M112 1.84L unit was replaced effectively by the TVS1320 (1.3L) unit due to the greater efficiency of the new series.

The LSA engine in the 2009+ Cadillac CTS-V is basically a supercharged LS3.  So it differs from the LS2 engine in the 2006/2007 CTS-V not only by the fact that it is supercharged but also because it has different heads, among other differences.

So how would a TVS2300 do when added to a ‘stock’ LS2 engine?  Try 130+ RWHP added, which seems oddly similar to the Magnuson number for the MP112 on a CTS-V.  My impression is that the TVS models have more head-room and can provide more air at lower temperature, and be spun faster with less loss of efficiency.  It is not clear to me from the raw numbers in kit claims that one system has more output in a near-stock setup than the other.

A supercharged 2007 CTS-V that pulled 350whp (wheel hp) stock, with a supercharger it might then make 480 whp.  Not surprisingly approximately what you might expect of a 2009+ CTS-V at the wheels.

Superchargers costs start around $7,500 plus installation, but reach beyond $10K depending on the kit and options.

With a Supercharger, premium fuel will be required.

Aftermarket Cadillac Modifications: Power

Once you purchase a pre-packaged sport tuned V-Series Cadillac, has the Factory pushed the vehicle as far as it can go, or is there some left on the table?  Is there anything else that could be done to these V-Series Cadillacs that would make them faster?

In a word, YES.  Like most tuning however, it is very good to start with a goal usage and power level in mind, and tune to those goals.  A classic hot-rodding question is: How much money do you have, and how fast do you want to go?

First of all, it depends on which V-Series Cadillac you focus on.  The STS-V and XLR-V have more in common with each other than the 2004-2007 CTS-V or the 2009+ CTS-V.

The STS-V and XLR-V are powered by the LC3 Supercharged 4.4L Northstar and make 440-469 hp stock depending on the model.

The 2004-2005 CTS-V was powered by the 5.7L V8 LS6 engine making 400 hp.

The 2006-2007 CTS-V was powered by the 6.0L V8 LS2 engine making 400 hp.

The newest V, the 2009+ CTS-V is powered by the Supercharged and Intercooled 6.2L V8 LSA engine making 556 hp.

LC3 4.4L Supercharged Northstar Tuning

For the STS-V and XLR-V the aftermarket offers re-tuning / re-calibration of the computer, cold air intakes, and performance exhausts.  Together these can net around 40 RWHP, or rear wheel horsepower.

LS6 or LS2 V8 Tuning (~400hp stock)

There is a rich suite of tuning options available for the LS6 or LS2, because they share a great deal of aftermarket development with ongoing LSx performance engine development.

Best bang for the buck items include:

  • Cam shaft — best done along with ported heads.  Cam/heads can add as much as 90 hp at the crankshaft for $2500 plus installation
  • Headers — long tube headers will cost around $1600 and add 20-30 RWHP
  • Supercharger — around 140 RWHP for US$6-7K
  • Dyno Tuning — results vary based on the other modifications on the vehicle, but give the best opportunity for gains from modifications.  Some level of custom tuning will be required with most changes.
  • LS7 Conversion — replace the LS2 or LS6 with a 505hp LS7
  • L92 heads / L76 Intake — To make the LS3 engine GM added the L92 heads to the LS2, so this is a known power combo. The 4.00-inch bore of the LS2 enables it to use LS1/LS6 heads, as well as L92-style heads (including LS3, LS9 and LSA engines).  The L76 intake allows the combo to fit under the hood.  For confusion, the L94 Engine in the current Escalade is an updated variant of the L92.

As an aside, not all adders are additive.  So while you might see 25 hp from adder A and 20 hp from Adder B on a stock setup, you might only reach +30hp from both together.

Second, to some extent a Supercharger works by “forcing” better breathing.  So if you plan to get a Supercharger, I would start with that.  If you want to stay all-motor, go with cam and heads and headers which all act to free up the engine’s breathing.

LSA Supercharged V8 Tuning (556 hp stock)

The LSA engine can be considered a Supercharged LS3 engine, with a steel crankshaft.  The LSA has rectangular port heads like the LS9 or L92 (Escalade engine) instead of Cathedral port heads like the LS2.  The rectangular port heads in the LSA flow a bit better than the cathedral port heads in the LS2.

Although the Supercharged LSA V8 is relatively new, the aftermarket offers include:

  • New supercharger snout to raise boost: with tuning around +74 hp for $2,500.
  • Dyno Tuning
  • Upgrade to the LS9’s Supercharger – Complete packages that include tuning, exhaust quote up to 700 hp, so +150 hp.
  • Upgrade the engine to the LS9:  The LS9 engine makes 638 hp stock.  LS9 Engine around $22K, so pricey
  • Headers with Tuning can produce around 50 RWHP for $2K
  • L92 Heads and Cam package – around 70 RWHP for $2,500 plus installation
  • Cold Air Induction kit

Eliminating Wheel-hop — 1st Gen Cadillac CTS-V

The 2004-2007 Cadillac CTS-V is an excellent performance luxury sedan.  With a 400 hp LS Series V8, Brembo brakes, sport suspension, and Cadillac appointments, the first Generation CTS-V is an intriguing automobile, and a terrific used Sports Sedan value.

One weakness frequently discussed for the 1st Generation CTS-V is wheel hop.  Wheel hop happens when instead of a tire/wheel transmitting power smooth to the car, or spinning, instead literally ‘hops’ in an up and down vertical motion.  This can lead to parts destruction in rapid fashion.

For the 2nd generation CTS-V Cadillac found a solution — by making the left and right rear axles different diameters, wheel-hop was solved.  Under load, both axles have torsional spring rates; this asymmetry decouples any resonance between them, reducing axle hop.

GForce and Hendrix Engineering have come out with retro-fit kits for the 1st Generation CTS-V’s that take a similar approach:

The GForce $549 kit includes:

Driver side 300m Axle
Passenger side big diameter 300m axle
CV Boots
CV Clamps
CV Grease

The best solution to eliminating wheel hop is to replace both the drivers side and passenger side axles with our big and little axle kit. We designed our axle kit to provide a properly sized set of axles that will eliminate most all wheel hop in most all conditions. The trick is to have a staggered axle diameter from side to side that will break up the harmonics associated with wheel hop. Several things come into play with our design such as material, heat treating procedures, weight and twisting properties

We make our axles from billet 300m steel, the strongest material available for making drivetrain products, much stronger then chromoly. We only use certified aircraft grade 300m material for our axles.

These axles will work on all 04-07 CTS-V’s.

The best thing about our 300m axles is the fact they are compatible with either the OEM inner and outer stubs or our line of inner and outer billet stubs for the CTS-V. If you ever want to up-grade to billet stubs down the road, you just buy the stubs, swap them in and your good to go for 1000 hp. A totally modular design! This kit is for the auto enthusiast that doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty. Once the half shafts are removed from the car, it is about a one hour job per side to swap the axles out with the OEM axles.

Alternate approach: For 04-05 gets the big passenger side axle; For 06-07 gets the smaller drivers side axle. I recommend you get both as above.

The Hendrix Engineering offer includes the bar and parts for the swap and one can have it swapped locally, or one can send an axle and Hendrix Engineering will  swap it out and shoot it back.  The kit costs $329 plus S&H.  If you have them install the axle it is $379. All of the Hendrix Econo Axles are driver side and they work on all years.  Unfortunately I could not find any information about their system on their website, but they appear to be responsive if contacted directly.
