Shopping for a Classic Cadillac

Cadillac has made some terrific cars over the years.  Each decade has a different look and style, and very different price points in the collector market.  I love the look of the 30s and 40s cars, and some of the 50s, but they are already very well valued in the market.  I am starting to narrow my consideration to a couple of models — the 1965/1966 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado (convertible), a 1967-1970 Cadillac DeVille Convertible, and a rough earlier Cadillac Convertible.

Cadillac also made a rear wheel drive convertible in 2004-2009, the XLR, but it has been eliminated from consideration by my Wife as ‘too modern’.

1965/1966 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado

The last of the rear-wheel drive Eldorados. Eldorado as a sub-brand meant the finest of the line since 1953.  Fleetwood was a custom high-line body shop later acquired by GM.  The Fleetwood Eldorados were to some less special than the earlier Eldorados, and too much like the rest of the Cadillac line for their year.  But they were still the pinnacle of features and options.

My friend Tim Carroll of Carroll Custom Cadillac notes:

When it comes to design, 67′ 68′ 69′ have the right body lines to compliment a convertible, it may be just me but the 65′ and 66′ look best with the detailed hard top body lines, these years seem to lose their detail to box look when the top is down?
However, they are beautiful too! I certainly would not turn one away!

I prefer rear-wheel drive, and these are still in a good range for picking up and preserving a classic.

1967-1970 Cadillac DeVille Convertible

Full-body, rear-wheel drive, 472 cubic inches of reliable OHV V8.  These are Cadillacs of the old school, with huge torque and hood lines.

2014 - 1

The Cadillac 472 cubic inch V8 is very similar to the later / contemporary 500 cubic inch Cadillac engines, and they share a lot of speed / aftermarket part support.  This makes them attractive for an ongoing project.

 Pre-1954 Cadillac

I would love to have and enjoy any of the earlier Cadillac Convertibles, but I believe most of them are already outside my budget unless we start with a really rough project Cadillac.

I love the look of the early cars though!

First Things First

My garage currently is occupied by my Duke SS100.  My late Father had purchased this late in life, and we enjoyed sharing stories of getting it back on the road and enjoying driving it.

I will need to sell my Duke SS100 [info at link] before I have space for the classic Cadillac, so not quite in the market yet.  But I know what I like…

Cadillac Sales Mark Best May Monthly Since 2007

Cadillac May sales featured strong SRX sales, and steady CTS sales.  Escalade had a good month, while XTS soldiers on.image

DETROIT – Cadillac’s U.S. sales showed continued growth with an increase of 6.4 percent in May, the best May since 2007. More than half of Cadillac buyers in May were new to the brand, not trading in a Cadillac vehicle.

The SRX crossover continues to sell at a record pace through the first five months of 2014, increasing 27 percent year over year. May also marked the best May ever in total and retail sales for the SRX.

With the next-generation 2015 Escalade on sale for a full month, total sales increased 30.3 percent year over year. The Escalade recorded its best May in total sales since 2008 and best May retail sales since 2007.

The 2014 Cadillac CTS sport sedan sales increased 39 percent year over year in May. The brand estimates the CTS has gained an additional 1 percentage point of market share in its midsize luxury car segment. The 2014 CTS has been named Motor Trend Car of the Year, one of Car and Driver’s 10 Best, Road & Track’s 2013 Luxury Car, an Edmunds.com Top Rated Vehicle and an Automobile Magazine 2014 All-Star.

“Cadillac’s elevated product portfolio continues to drive growth and attract new buyers to the brand,” said Bill Peffer, Cadillac U.S. vice president for sales and service. “And our continued growth last month marks our best May since 2007.”

Earlier this spring, Cadillac was also rated highest in customer satisfaction with dealer service among luxury brands by J.D. Power and named a J.D. Power 2014 Customer Champion.

Cadillac sales up 5% in April 2014 on strong SRX, CTS

Cadillac sales in April were up 5.1% overall for the month, although still down for the year to date.  SRX moved over 4,500 units again in April, and CTS made a surprising showing — perhaps best month ever for the new redesign?

ATS was flat, still well off the 5K per month target.  XTS was down sharply; CTS may be grabbing up all the XTS sales now?    Escalade continues to fade.

The ELR sold 61 examples, first time it has not sold more per month than previous:

  • 6 in Dec
  • 41 in Jan
  • 58 in Feb
  • 81 in March
  • 61 in April

And a new total of 247 ELRs have found new homes.  At this pace we might predict a total sales near 750 for the year?

The press release below suggests 61% of Cadillac buyers were new to the marque, so that seems good news for overall growth.

Press Release:

DETROIT – Cadillac’s U.S. sales for April show that the brand’s products continue to attract new buyers. Retail sales to individual consumers were up 12 percent, with total sales up 5 percent, including a 55-percent decline in fleet sales.

Sixty-one percent of U.S. Cadillac buyers in April were new to the brand, and did not trade-in or dispose of a prior Cadillac model.

The SRX crossover is selling at a record pace through the first four months of 2014, and increased 31 percent in April year-over-year. Initial deliveries of the all-new, next generation 2015 Escalade SUV began in the U.S. in April. Sales are off to a brisk start, as Cadillac closed April with less than five days’ supply of the new Escalade available.

The 2014 Cadillac CTS sport sedan sales increased 36 percent. The brand estimates that the CTS has gained more than two points of market share so far in 2014 in its midsize luxury car segment. The 2014 CTS has been named Motor Trend Car of the Year, one of Car and Driver’s 10 Best, Road & Track’s 2013 Luxury Car, an Edmunds.com Top Rated Vehicle and an Automobile Magazine 2014 All-Star.

“It was a strong month for Cadillac, as new products are driving growth and attracting new buyers,” said Bill Peffer, Cadillac U.S. vice president of sales and service. “Strong sales in March and April have enabled us to pull even with 2013, despite the industry’s very cold start to the year.”

Cadillac last month was also rated highest in customer satisfaction with dealer service among luxury brands by J.D. Power. The ranking followed being named a J.D. Power 2014 Customer Champion in March
