Cadillac XLR LH2 V8 Tuning – Tune 10a #HPTuners #Tuning #Cars

Tune 10a reduced the timing advance from Tune 9B across much of the range to sync up with the MBT timing in the appropriate cyl air ranges.

That was the plan at least — it turns out I didn’t account for static retard, which is a per-cylinder retard programmed in at the factory in certain RPM ranges.  On average that reduced the timing at redline by almost a degree.  I also halved the IAT adder multiplier from 6000-6800, so we were missing 1.6 degrees there.  So instead of running 30 degrees at 6800 I ended up flatlining at 27 degrees from 6400-6800.

Overall Tune 10 was a good result, in that it continued to show no KR and showed that we can get equivalent results with less timing, which leads to locking our KR.

XLR Tune 10a-1 Calc Hp and timing discussion

The dark blue and red lines are hp and torque on the left axis; the other lines are test result advance, test result KR (green at bottom), MBT advance (goal timing in maroon), and Tune 10B advance planning in light blue.

I was missing a degree of advance til 6000 then around 3 degrees by 6700.

XLR Tune 10a Virtual Dyno Comparison

The Virtual Dyno runs were in a range, at 264, 266, 271, 274 whp.  The red line at 266 whp is for the same calculated data in the first graph; 266 whp / 0.8 trans losses = ~332.5 hp.

XLR tune 10 timing planning

This is my worksheet to consider the MBT timing based on the cyl air pressure ranges, what the engine is currently doing in the test, and what I would like it to do in the next tune 10B.

XLR tune 10a hptuners gauges

The HPTuners graph suggests that power was increasing in step with timing advance until the timing went flat at 27 degrees at 6400 rpm.  I am hoping that if the timing continues up to 30 degrees at 6800 rpm as suggested in the MBT table then we will see an increase in power above 6400 rpm.

Cadillac XLR LH2 V8 Tuning – More Tune 9a

Tonight I had cooler weather so I re-tested Tune 9a for baseline comparison.

XLR Tune 9A2 Comparison Calc HP

The 9A2 runs showed some KR spikes at 4150 rpm and 5000 RPM. This appears to relate to a high IAT advance multiplier at those RPMs, which I will zero out for Tune 9B.

XLR Tune 9a2 to 9a comparison

The Virtual Dyno for 9a2 was equivalent to 9a1, which is good news (same tune, different day).

Tune 9B will also reapply the MAF 2% touch up around 8,000 hz since there are some signs of running lean there.

XLR Tune 9A2-0139 HPTuners

The issue of KR due to multiplied IAT advance at lower temps could be why the XLR has consistently run better at high temps (which is counter-intuitive). In the next tune I will change the multipliers below 6000 RPM/below 104F for IAT advance to 0. The alternative would be to zero out IAT advance adders at cooler temps, but there may be some value in keeping them at higher RPMs.

Because the KR doesn’t go up at higher RPM it may be false knock?

Cadillac XLR LH2 Tuning – Tune 7B Less Timing low, Lean

I am glad that I am running 2 tests on every setting now, as I am seeing some variability.

XLR Tune 7B Hp Torque 2 runs

Tune 7B reduced the timing low, included some knock reserve where we were seeing KR, kept the timing high, and put piston protection back to 8192 instead of 6000 rpm.

Both the runs on the graph are tune 7B same day, same roadway, so same conditions.  The graph shows calculated HP at the top, degrees of advance in the middle, and degrees of KR at the bottom.  What happens is the 2nd run gets a knock event around 5500 rpm and loses 2 points of advance that it never seems to recover.

XLR Tune 7B run-to-run and 7A

Throw in 7A as well, which had all the advance and a lot of KR, and you can see that 7B-0236 basically emulates 7A but via timing table not knock retard.

Tune 7B Virtual Dyno Compare w 7A 6G S3

I am focusing on the calc HP/torque and not the Virtual Dyno for now, but the Virtual Dyno loved these tunes — except it shows some huge variability it could not smooth out.

I hope to gather more sample data for Tune 7B next.
