Cadillac Tuning for Results – Shift RPM

Engineers spent many hours & iterations to optimize the tune in your Cadillac.  But once you make some changes to the configuration and performance of the Cadillac, where is the best tune now?

cartestredlinecomparison2

I continue to enjoy Cartest2000 as an analysis tool.  This what-if analysis shows a comparison between a modified STS-V with 500 hp using a 6400 rpm redline (shiftpoints, which since the program assumes the automatic shifts at redline become the effective redline) and one shifting at 6800 rpm.  The LC3 engine in the STS-V has an actual redline at 6800 rpm, so we are well within the design operating range of the engine.  Waiting to shift at 6800 rpm gives a 0.11 advantage in 0-60 time, and a 0.15 advantage in the quartermile.

This table shows the shift logic for the 6L80 used in the STS-V.  The transmission starts to shift from 1->2 at 30 mph, 2->3 at 58 mph, and 3->4 at 94 mph.  When it actually shifts is around 0.3 seconds after this point.  If the vehicle is at maximum acceleration from a standing start that may hit at redline; at slower acceleration on the highway that may hit below redline.

This graph is a parameter sensitivity analysis — used to show if one varies the shift point, what the result is in order to study how sensitive that result is to this parameter.  In this case, we see the ideal effective redline or shift point for the quartermile would be around 7100 rpm.

Hp Tuners Gauge View

Hp Tuners Gauge View

This graphic shows a gauge view from a HP Tuners scan at the moment the car opted to shift from 2 to 3 under wide open throttle acceleration — at 58 mph as expected.  Although at wide open throttle, during this shift the engine reached a max of 6,087 RPM — not near the 6400 RPM or 6800 RPM.

The shift completed around 0.4 sec later at 67 mph.  Note: click on images to see them larger; hit back to return to article.

My conclusion is that a slightly higher speed & RPM for wide open throttle shifting in sport mode would be within design parameters, and beneficial for performance.

Displaying IAT2: DashCommand, Innovate OT-2, Cadillac? #Motorama

The search for an easy way of displaying IAT2 — which is incoming air temperature after the supercharger & intercooler and as the air enters the manifold — which is the holy grail of telling how things are going for supercharged cars.

Some time ago I picked up an Innovate OT-2 OBD-II module.  This device connects to the OBD-II diagnostic port and creates a wifi hotpoint to share the OBD II info from the car to a connected wifi device.

Okay, Hardware, but what software for displaying IAT2?

I previously had used the software with my IPAD and Logworks, a free software that comes from Innovate Motorsports.  This all worked well enough to provide a virtual dash with various gauges.  I was not able however to tease it to display my IAT2.

I can display IAT2 with the HPTuners software, as we have seen.  However, that requires a windows laptop and HPtuners plug.  The desire is to display it on my IPAD, which would be easier to have along for drives or roadtrips.

DashCommand for displaying IAT2?

DashCommand by Palmer Performance is configurable software to display a virtual dash on a variety of platforms.  When I was experimenting with my OT-2 previously it was not supported by DashCommand.  Now I find that it is.

Here are some default screen from DashCommand on my IPAD1 connected to the STS-V via OT-2:

So that all works per se, but I don’t see a way on the IPAD to display IAT2, nor do I see a way to specify a custom PID which would then allow it to be displayed.  Disappointing for a $49 IOS app.

Torque on the android platform apparently does offer custom PID display, but I have the IOS IPAD or IPhone.

DashCommand does allow customizable and downloadable dash designs from dashxl.net.  These may be created or edited using windows software which is free from that site.  There is also a repository of other user dash designs which may be downloaded.  I have not found a pre-designed dash that has what I am looking for — ambient, IAT1, and IAT2 similar to my HP Tuners display.

But I am hopeful that I can find one, or design one using the toolset that will look something like the key gauges in the upper right of the HPTuners display above.

If you have already solved how to display IAT2 on an IOS device please share!

UPDATE:

Here is a cruise and IAT2 scan today for IAT2s, at top of 2nd gear about to shift into 3rd.

The IAT2s ranged from 111F to around 120F at different parts of the drive, which seems typical for my V and setup.  At this temp it is staying out of negative IAT advance, so good.

DIY Spray Detailer Test 2

Today I had a good opportunity to retest the DIY Spray Detailer.

STS-V hood with offending debris

STS-V hood with offending debris

On the hood (bonnet) of my Cadillac STS-V I found a patch of bird debris that needed to be removed.   Bird poop can be quite harmful to paint.  The hood was also covered in a light dusting of, well, dust.  I live in Plano, Texas which intended to be a prairie and not a suburb, so we get dust.  The hood needed a good spritz rinse, bird poop removal, and clean-up.

I adjusted the nozzle on the spray bottle to allow a good stream first, to rinse and break up the debris field.  Then I adjusted to a spray pattern to fog the entire hood. Finally, I used a microfiber towel to wipe and dry the hood.  Spray on, wipe off, easy, done.

My impression is most spray bottles have this sort of adjust-ability for pattern of spray, but the specific bottles I got were from Sam’s Club in the auto parts or industrial supplies area.

The results is a clean, good looking hood free of bird poop and ready for action.
