Cadillac ATS brakes how quickly?

The Cadillac ATS brakes should be great — proven Brembo brakes and light weight make for good braking dynamics.  Cadillac issued a nice release featuring the Brembo performance braking system on the upcoming Cadillac ATS.  Good, makes sense to keep the chatter going until the ATS gets to the showrooms.

Cadillac ATS Brakes

When equipped with Brembo brakes, ATS’s estimated stopping distance from 60-0 mph of 129 feet [sic] is among the best in the class

But the photo caption of the article mentions:  “When equipped with Brembo brakes, ATS’s estimated stopping distance from 60-0 mph of 129 feet is among the best in the class,”

It is? No.  The Cadillac ATS brakes take 109 feet to stop from 60-0, just like the BMW 335i.

Looks like the press release needs an update; the Cadillac ATS brakes are better than advertised.  Go figure.

Brembo brakes are preferred because they are multi-piston caliper brakes.  What that means is you can enjoy more even and predictable braking.  It also means that the brakes can be more effective — leading to shorter braking distances.

Why do the Cadillac ATS brakes come from Brembo?

Brembo brakes were first used on the Cadillac V-Series, or high performance products.  In fact, the Current Cadillac XTS and Cadillac ATS have a lot of V series characteristics — performance suspensions, performance brakes.   So although an XTS-V is not planned, the premium model of XTS brings everything a traditional V series would except the power plant.

Now that the Cadillac ATS brakes, bring on that V-power

Cadillac does plan to bring out an ATS-V, perhaps as soon as next year.  The ATS-V hopefully will bring the performance power and we’ll have another race car in the V-stable.

Cadillac ATS Options — Build the best ATS

Cadillac now has a Build your Own planner up on the Cadillac ATS website, so let’ s make some choices for Cadillac ATS options and build the best Cadillac ATS!

Cadillac ATS options

First, I want the 2L Turbo four power train. Although the 3.6L V6 has 321 hp vs the 272 hp rating of the 2L Turbo, I feel the Turbo 4 offers better balance and more opportunities for tuning.

2.0L Turbo I4 DI DOHC Engine with Variable Valve Timing

The all-new 2.0L Turbo makes its Cadillac debut with the ATS. This dynamic engine features Dual Overhead Camshaft design, continuously Variable Valve Timing and Direct Fuel Injection for optimal performance and engine efficiency. The 2.0L Turbo boasts impressive horsepower ratings and provides peak torque through a wide RPM range, delivering immediate, responsive power in any situation. Contributing to this broad power band is a turbocharger that generates up to 20 pounds of boost with virtually no turbo lag. Drivers can choose from a sporty 6-speed automatic with tap-shift control, or the new TREMEC 6-speed manual available on rear-wheel drive models. The 2.0L Turbo powertrain produces:

  • 272 hp @ 5500 rpm
  • 260 lb-ft of torque @1700-5500 rpm

Here in Texas 2 wheel drive is good. If you live where there is more snow you may prefer AWD.

2L Turbo Premium is the all-in selection:

2.0L Turbo Premium Features

The Premium Collection ingeniously melds sophistication with athleticism. The 2.0L Turbo direct-injected four-cylinder 272 HP engine features a 6-speed automatic transmission standard, with a Tremec 6-speed manual available. Rear-Wheel Drive includes a revolutionary Magnetic Ride Control suspension, limited-slip differential, high-capacity engine cooling and performance summer tires.1 Inside, you’ll find a full-color, reconfigurable Head-Up Display (HUD), Cadillac CUE with navigation2 and a Bose® premium surround sound system.

THE 2.0L TURBO PREMIUM COLLECTION INCLUDES OR REPLACES FEATURES INCLUDED ON THE 2.0L TURBO PERFORMANCE TRIM, PLUS:

  1. Full-color, reconfigurable Head-Up Display (HUD)
  2. CUE with navigation2
  3. 60/40 split fold rear seat
  4. Sport suspension with Magnetic Ride Control and limited-slip differential
  5. High-capacity engine cooling
  6. 18” machined-finish aluminum wheels
  7. Performance summer run-flat tires1

Exterior: Crystal Red Tintcoat

Interior: Light Platinum leather seating surfaces, Brownstone accents and Okapi Stripe trim

Next we have a choice of a pair of wheel sets, either 18″ x 8″ front, 18″ x 9″ rear forged aluminum wheels with bright machined-finish (and stretched-V spokes) or polished finish (and straight spokes). I can’t tell which i would prefer so I’ll stick to the machined finish for now.

That would make good Cadillac ATS options for me — although I want to wait and see the ATS-V before I’ll be ready to shop a replacement for my STS-V.

Optioning the 2013 Cadillac ATS

The first question for the upcoming 2013 Cadillac ATS is:  do you want the 272hp 2L Turbo 4 — starting at $35,795 — or the 321 hp 3.6L DI V6 starting at $42,090?

Right behind that choice however — and the 2L Turbo is likely to be the price / performance silver lining  — will you want the 2L Turbo Performance Package (1SJ), or Premium Package (1SL)?

In Cadillac parlance, the Performance Package generally includes the key performance options in an easy selection.  The Premium package however often adds features — at a price — that are desirable even for hard core performance enthusiasts.  There is also a ‘Luxury’ model available (1SG) that combines more luxury oriented features that non-performance Buyers may prefer.

The 2L Turbo Performance package looks like this:

Y42 Performance Package, includes

  • (T4F) HID headlamps with Adaptive Forward Lighting,
  • (GGC) Midnight chrome accented grille,
  • (HD7) Illuminating outside door handles,
  • (JF5) sport alloy pedals,
  • (AHE) performance seats,
  • (A6E) fixed seat back with armrest and pass-through,
  • (ATH) keyless access passive entry,
  • (UDF) Ultrasonic Front Park Assist,
  • (UD7) Ultrasonic Rear Park Assist and
  • (KB7) steering wheel-mounted Paddle Shift Controls (not available with [M3L] 6-speed manual transmission)

and the Premium package adds the full color heads-up display (!), steering wheel paddle controls for the auto trans, FE3 performance suspension, limited slip differential, and Magnetic Ride Control:

Y43 Premium Package, includes

  • (T4F) HID headlamps with Adaptive Forward Lighting,
  • (HD7) illuminating outside door handles,
  • (JF5) sport alloy pedals,
  • (AHE) performance seats,
  • (UV6) full-color head-up display,
  • (KB7) steering wheel-mounted Paddle Shift Controls (not available with [M3L] 6-speed manual transmission),
  • (FE3) performance suspension (not available with [M3L] 6-speed manual transmission),
  • (V03) performance cooling system,
  • (G80) Limited Slip Differential and
  • (F55) Magnetic Ride Control

The Premium package also has navigation standard, while the Performance package has Nav as an option.

Suspensions — generally Cadillac grades suspensions from FE1 to FE3 or FE4 as the capabilities move from standard to highest performance.  The Magnetic Ride suspension on the Premium model is the most desirable setup.

The grill and parking assist items on the Performance Package list but not on the Premium Package list are a bit of a red herring, since they are standard on the Premium Package and part of the Luxury Package:

Y40 Luxury Package, includes (GGC) midnight chrome accented grille, (UDF) Ultrasonic Front Park Assist, (ATH) Keyless Access passive entry and (AM9) split-folding rear seat

The other BIG feature standard on the Premium and optional for the Performance will be the Cadillac User Experience (CUE) system.  The 2L Sport model can be optioned up to include the HUD as well.

Both the Sport and the Premium package get the seating package standard, which adds power memory seats and rearview backup camera:

Y44 Seating Package, includes leather seating surfaces, (AE8) 10-way power driver and front passenger seats including 2-way power lumbar, (A45) Memory Package, (DR2) heated outside power-adjustable mirrors with auto-dimming driver side, (DD8) inside rearview auto-dimming mirror, (UG1) Universal Home Remote, (BTV) Adaptive remote start (not available with [ML3] 6-speed manual transmission), and (UVC) Rearview backup camera

Summary:

How will you option out your Cadillac ATS?  Will you keep it clean and disciplined and stick to the Performance model, or will you write a check for the Cadillac ATS 2L Turbo Premium?
