{"id":9101,"date":"2011-01-06T07:09:30","date_gmt":"2011-01-06T13:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/?p=9101"},"modified":"2011-01-06T07:09:30","modified_gmt":"2011-01-06T13:09:30","slug":"gm-adds-easy-cellphonegadget-charging-to-future-models","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/gm-adds-easy-cellphonegadget-charging-to-future-models\/","title":{"rendered":"GM adds easy cellphone\/gadget charging to future models"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GM announced an investment in Powermat and the planned inclusion of Powermat inductive charging technology in future GM models.\u00a0 I&#8217;m all for it.<\/p>\n<p>The idea here is instead of plugging your phone into a cable and then the cable into the accessory power, you would just put your phone in a niche in the center console.\u00a0 The phone would then recognize that power is available and charge from the console without a cable.\u00a0 The power is actually transferred via induction using a magnetic field.<\/p>\n<p>Besides saving on a cord for each cell phone or device why is this exciting?<\/p>\n<p>This is exciting because this is eventually how I want to recharge my electric-powered Cadillac of the future.\u00a0 I want to drive it into my garage, and have the garage recognize that it is home and begin to charge the car via an inductive charge through the floor of the garage.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Press Release:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>GM, Powermat to Put Added \u2018Charge\u2019 in Chevy Volt<\/h2>\n<h3>Automaker Invests in Start-Up to Do Away With Charging Cords<\/h3>\n<p>2011-01-06<\/p>\n<p>LAS VEGAS \u2013 General Motors and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powermat.com\/us\/home\/?gclid=CNmkrZO_o6YCFce7KgodGT__pA\" target=\"_blank\">Powermat<\/a>,  a pioneer in wireless charging technology, announced a commercial  agreement today that will eliminate the need for charging cords for  personal electronic devices in many future Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and  Cadillac products beginning mid-2012.<\/p>\n<p>GM Ventures, the company\u2019s venture capital subsidiary, will invest $5  million in Powermat to accelerate the technology\u2019s development and  support efforts to grow Powermat\u2019s business globally.<\/p>\n<p>Powermat\u2019s technology allows electronic devices \u2013 smart phones, MP3  players and gaming devices \u2013 to be charged safely and efficiently,  according to Powermat CEO Ran Poliakine.<\/p>\n<p>The Chevrolet Volt, conceived as a reinvention of the automobile that  would help reduce America\u2019s dependence on oil, while providing the  assurance of an extended driving range, will be one of the first GM  vehicles to offer this technology.\u00a0 The technology is expected to  revolutionize how electronic devices are charged in a car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine a mat or shelf where you could put your iPhone, your Droid  or other personal device and charge it automatically while you commute  to work, run errands or as you\u2019re driving on a family vacation,\u201d said  Micky Bly, GM\u2019s lead electronics executive, including infotainment,  hybrids and battery electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chevy Volt will be one of the first applications, but we intend to expand it across our vehicle portfolio,\u201d Bly said.<\/p>\n<p>Powermat, a private firm, was founded in 2007 and offers wireless  charging products for the home in a number of retail stores, including  Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart.<\/p>\n<p>Poliakine is excited to start with the Chevrolet Volt, which has swept major Car of the Year awards to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGM is among the rarest of giants in today\u2019s business climate: a  forward-thinking innovator with the courage and good sense to care about  the well-being of the consumer and the well-being of our planet,\u201d  Poliakine said.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Lauckner, who helped create the Volt concept and now is President  of GM Ventures, has been dreaming about a technology like Powermat for  years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe first developed the Volt concept car in 2006,\u201d Lauckner said.  \u201cThe intent was to revolutionize every aspect of the car, not just the  propulsion system.\u00a0 We had something like this in mind even then, and we  think it will have widespread appeal.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GM announced an investment in Powermat and the planned inclusion of Powermat inductive charging technology in future GM models.\u00a0 I&#8217;m all for it.
