{"id":17544,"date":"2015-08-23T19:37:23","date_gmt":"2015-08-24T00:37:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/?p=17544"},"modified":"2015-08-23T19:37:23","modified_gmt":"2015-08-24T00:37:23","slug":"cadillac-xlr-validating-frontal-area-calculation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/cadillac-xlr-validating-frontal-area-calculation\/","title":{"rendered":"Cadillac XLR validating frontal area calculation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_4226\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/X09CA_XL004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4226\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4226\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/X09CA_XL004-1024x800.jpg\" alt=\"2009 Cadillac XLR\" width=\"584\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/X09CA_XL004-1024x800.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/X09CA_XL004-500x391.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2009 Cadillac XLR<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I did a bit more work on frontal area, which appears to support the short-cut we took <a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/cadillac-xlr-virtual-dyno-conventions\/\">earlier.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">From a thread on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hptuners.com\/forum\/showthread.php?32828-Brad-Barnhill-s-Virtual-Dyno-with-HP-Tuners&amp;p=245267&amp;viewfull=1#post245267\">Virtual Dyno on HpTuners<\/a>, The quick way to calculate frontal area is (((w*h)(0.85))\/12)\/12 = Frontal Area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">For the <a href=\"https:\/\/archives.media.gm.com\/us\/cadillac\/en\/product_services\/r_cars\/r_c_XLR\/07index.html\">2007 base XLR<\/a>, W=72.3in,\u00a0 H=50.4in so for a first approximation (((72.3*50.4)*.85)\/12\/12)= 21.5 ft2.<\/p>\n<p>The question then is the 0.85 factor.\u00a0 To test that, I downloaded a diagram of the 2007 Cadillac XLR from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-blueprints.com\/\">the-blueprints.com<\/a> and pulled just the frontal area into a photo editor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/cadillac-xlr-2007-frontal.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17545\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/cadillac-xlr-2007-frontal.png\" alt=\"cadillac-xlr-2007 frontal\" width=\"476\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/cadillac-xlr-2007-frontal.png 476w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/cadillac-xlr-2007-frontal-455x300.png 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, I selected the parts of the diagram that were NOT XLR<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/xlr-outline-of-not-xlr.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17546\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/xlr-outline-of-not-xlr.png\" alt=\"xlr outline of not xlr\" width=\"476\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/xlr-outline-of-not-xlr.png 476w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/xlr-outline-of-not-xlr-455x300.png 455w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then I used the photo editor (GIMP) to tell me how many pixels were shaded (20,668) of the total pixels size (149,464) which resolves to 20668\/149464 = 13.8%, or 86.2% for the XLR.<\/p>\n<p>That makes the frontal area for the <a href=\"https:\/\/archives.media.gm.com\/us\/cadillac\/en\/product_services\/r_cars\/r_c_XLR\/07index.html\">2007 base XLR<\/a>, (((72.3*50.4)*.862)\/12\/12)= 21.8 ft2.\u00a0 In this case the approximation was good, but I will update my Virtual Dyno XLR profile to 21.8 ft2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did a bit more work on frontal area, which appears to support the short-cut we took earlier.
