{"id":13134,"date":"2012-06-16T14:39:51","date_gmt":"2012-06-16T19:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/?p=13134"},"modified":"2012-06-17T18:55:19","modified_gmt":"2012-06-17T23:55:19","slug":"intercooler-pump-test-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/intercooler-pump-test-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Intercooler pump test 4: Jabsco 29 gpm pump"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Update: IAT2 test results added<\/h2>\n<p>Today I performed an intercooler pump test on the Jabsco 50840 12v pump as a replacement for the Bosch OEM intercooler pump in my Cadillac STS-V.\u00a0 The Cadillac STS-V uses the Bosch 00 392 022 006 pump.<\/p>\n<p>My Cadillac has a 2nd heat exchanger, an S3 provided by Timmy C, and uses a 1 gallon AVS inline intercooler tank.\u00a0 The goal of these tests is to improve intercooler cooling, which will enable the supercharged V8 to make more power.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13135\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0042.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13135\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13135\" title=\"IMG_0042\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0042-1024x764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0042-1024x764.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0042-500x373.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0042-401x300.jpg 401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13135\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Test setup with Jabsco pump in the loop<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Intercooler pump test setup<\/h2>\n<p>To run a bucket test I put a FROM bucket at intercooler height, flowing into the pump and system, and out from the intercooler to a TO bucket.\u00a0 This is similar to my <a title=\"Intercooler Pump Test 3\" href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/cadillac-sts-v-intercooler-flow-gpm-bucket-test-3\/\">previous intercooler pump test <\/a>setup, for continuity.\u00a0 I have added a TO bucket that is a mixing bucket which makes it very easy to measure output.<\/p>\n<p>Predicted intercooler pump test flow:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12946\" style=\"width: 711px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/pumpandsystemflowpredicted.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12946\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12946\" title=\"pumpandsystemflowpredicted\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/pumpandsystemflowpredicted.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/pumpandsystemflowpredicted.png 701w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/pumpandsystemflowpredicted-500x370.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pump rated flow vs head pressure and system pressure curve<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Jabsco centrifugal pump does 29 gpm against no resistance, and the Bosch pump does 8 gpm against no resistance. In an actual system the pump curves overlaid with the system resistance curve predict where the pump will actually run in that system.<\/p>\n<h2>Intercooler Pump Test Results<\/h2>\n<p>In today&#8217;s test the Jabsco pump measured at a steady 2.25 gallons per 30 seconds, or 4.5 gpm (gallons per minute).\u00a0 Previously, the Bosch OEM pump ran at 3.5 gpm, which would suggest the system pressure at that flow was 6 psid.\u00a0 As flow increases, the resistance pressure in the system increases roughly at the square of the flow.\u00a0 I expected the Jabsco pump to run 4.3 gpm, so the 4.5 gpm is good.\u00a0 The Jabsco has 1\/3.5 = 28.5% more flow than the OEM pump.<\/p>\n<p>I still have more work to do to complete pump installation.\u00a0 I will retest with the pump in\u00a0place.\u00a0 I will follow-up the intercooler pump test with IAT2 tests to see how the new higher flow impacts intercooler cooling.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13178\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0054.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13178\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13178\" title=\"IMG_0054\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0054-1024x764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0054-1024x764.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0054-500x373.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0054-401x300.jpg 401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Continuing to modify and fit check the Jabsco pump on the OEM bracket.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Intercooler Pump Test Update<\/h2>\n<p>Today I completed the pump install and conducted a test run with the new pump:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13181\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Test-run-hot-with-jabsco-pump.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13181\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13181\" title=\"Test run hot with jabsco pump\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Test-run-hot-with-jabsco-pump-1024x657.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Test-run-hot-with-jabsco-pump-1024x657.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Test-run-hot-with-jabsco-pump-500x321.png 500w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Test-run-hot-with-jabsco-pump-467x300.png 467w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Test-run-hot-with-jabsco-pump.png 1028w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Intercooler pump test showing IAT2 over time during a 20 min drive<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Click on the graph for a larger version.<\/p>\n<p>What this graph shows is temperature in degrees F on the Y axis, over a 20 min drive on the X axis.\u00a0 Spikes in the graph represent acceleration runs.\u00a0 The red line is the OEM pump without the inline tank; the blue line is the OEM pump with the inline tank; the green line is the Jabsco pump with the inline tank.\u00a0 Today it is 92F ambient; on the prior test days it was 90F ambient air temperature.<\/p>\n<p>I read this test result to show that the jabsco pump&#8217;s greater flow allows the system to reach an IAT2 equilibrium temperature of 118-120F, an improvement of 7F.\u00a0\u00a0 The acceleration spike is a 20F increase, an improvement of 5F in addition to the lower equilibrium, so that at peak temps are 12f lower than previous hot day.<\/p>\n<h2>Intercooler pump test conclusion:<\/h2>\n<p>The Jabsco pump has a 1 gpm higher flow than the OEM Bosch pump.\u00a0 This 1 gpm greater flow lowers the operating IAT2 temps by 7F<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13184\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/gauge-set-jabsco-max-2nd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13184\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13184\" title=\"gauge set jabsco max 2nd\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/gauge-set-jabsco-max-2nd-1024x774.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/gauge-set-jabsco-max-2nd-1024x774.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/gauge-set-jabsco-max-2nd-500x378.png 500w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/gauge-set-jabsco-max-2nd-396x300.png 396w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/gauge-set-jabsco-max-2nd.png 1375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ambient temp 92F;
