{"id":12136,"date":"2012-04-03T20:56:57","date_gmt":"2012-04-04T01:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/?p=12136"},"modified":"2012-04-03T20:56:57","modified_gmt":"2012-04-04T01:56:57","slug":"comparing-iat1-iat2-rpm-different-cooling-strategies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/comparing-iat1-iat2-rpm-different-cooling-strategies\/","title":{"rendered":"Comparing IAT1, IAT2, RPM &#038; different cooling strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just getting the hang of histograms in HPtuners.\u00a0 These are powerful analysis tools that allow comparison of occurences of a variable, say IAT2 temperature in the manifold after the supercharger, in a table defined by IAT1, intake temperature, and engine RPM.\u00a0 The higher the RPM, the faster the supercharger spins, and the more likely the IAT2 will heat up.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an example heatsoaked from my STS-V with the OEM cooling system:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12142\" style=\"width: 393px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/iatstudyhotrunbruce1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12142\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12142\" title=\"iatstudyhotrunbruce\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/iatstudyhotrunbruce1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"383\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bruce Heat-soaked Run<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Reading the histogram:\u00a0 down the left axis are a range of values for the IAT1, intake air.\u00a0 Across the top are various engine speeds in RPM\/1000, so 2 means 2000 rpm.\u00a0 The values in the body of the table show what the average IAT2 or manifold air temperature after the supercharger heats up the air and the intercooler cools it back down was at the given IAT1 and RPM.\u00a0 The cells are colored green for cooler temps up to red for hotter temps to make it easy to read.<\/p>\n<p>We can see in this diagram that anytime the engine was at\u00a0 6500 RPM and the intake temp at 95F the average IAT2 temp was 142F, or +47F hotter.<\/p>\n<p>The STS-V has plenty of opportunity for heat soak.\u00a0 Heat soak is when the engine has been run and retained the heat so that the intake tubing, manifold, and IAT2 sensor are all hot.\u00a0 For contrast, here is a run with my STS-V not heat soaked:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12143\" style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/iatstudycoldrunbruce1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12143\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12143\" title=\"iatstudycoldrunbruce\" src=\"http:\/\/caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/iatstudycoldrunbruce1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/iatstudycoldrunbruce1.jpg 378w, http:\/\/www.caddyinfo.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/iatstudycoldrunbruce1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bruce not heat soaked run<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We see here that when the IAT1 was 65F and the engine hit 6500 the average IAT2 was 108F, or +43F.<\/p>\n<p>Jaimie has a custom intercooler cooling system on his STS-V consisting of a replacement for the OEM heat exchanger, a 2nd front-mounted heat exchanger, and a high-flow intercooler coolant pump.
